Meghalaya is one of the 8(eight) North Eastern States of India. It is dominated by 3(three) major tribes viz; Garo, Khasi and Jaintia. It has 12(twelve) districts and has total population of about 3.28 Millions.
Tura is located about 323km away from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya and about 220km from Guwahati, Assam. It is the headquarter of West Garo Hills district. It has 3(three) district hospitals viz; Tura Civil Hospital, District Maternity & Child Hospital and District TB hospital.
The 100(hundred) bedded Tura Civil Hospital was inaugurated on 22nd June 1988 with the following wards Viz; Medicine, Surgery, Operation Theatre, Dentistry, Laboratory, Blood Bank, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology(which was later shifted to District Maternity & Child Hospital).
Tura Civil Hospital is the referral center for all 5(five) districts of Garo Hills, Meghalaya. The services are not only rendered to the people of Garo Hills but also to the population of neighboring districts of Assam as well.
With the addition of the 100(hundred) bedded Annexed, the basement of this new building with 10 beds was allotted for a Psychiatry ward. Also departments such as Orthopedics, Oncology, Dermatology and ICU was started. It has also been identified for a Government Medical College, Tura and the construction for the administration block and other buildings at Doldegre, Tura has already been started since 2018. Tura Civil Hospital has Regular staffs viz; about 51 Doctors including Dental surgeons, AYUSH Doctors and Medical Officers recruited under National Health Mission. It has about 79 Nursing staffs, 12Office/Administration staffs, about 30 Paramedical staffs and about 81 general IV grade staffs.
Department of Psychiatry, Tura Civil Hospital, has 10 bed under District Mental Health Programme, West Garo Hills, Tura. Additional 14(fourteen) beds was increased considering the increase number of cases requiring hospital admission. Recently, Addiction Treatment Facility having outdoor Facility was also initiated. Currently, the department is offering general Psychiatry services such as Mental Health Camps, Community Awareness/IEC programs, School programs, and Suicide Prevention Programs. The Department also conducts disability assessment camps in collaboration with District Social Welfare Department, Tura and District Disability Rehabilitation Centre, Tura.
Service delivery includes OPD, IPD, 24*7 Emergency services, Ambulatory services, outreach free Medical Camps and Training Programs
